Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 30, 1853, Zundert - July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. Gogh created about 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings in a relatively small time interval of ten years. Gogh's work was almost unknown during his lifetime (only one painting was sold less than a year before Gogh's suicide). During his lifetime, Van Gogh did not receive much recognition. Posthumously, however, his fame rose at a dizzying rate.
Gogh painted a number of paintings of Sunflowers. For Gogh , the yellow color of sunflowers represented happiness and optimism , and he considered painting them a great challenge. Four original paintings of Sunflowers were painted by Vincent van Gogh to decorate the bedroom of his house in Arles in honor of Paul Gauguin's arrival. Three have survived to this day. In addition to London, another original hangs in Munich and the latter is then part of a private collection.
